Quartz countertops are the highest quality and lowest maintenance of any of the countertop surfaces available.  It is stunningly beautiful and the color range is growing each year.  It is a man-made product that is uniform in color and pattern so you can be assured of a perfect match between slabs.  Quartz is the top of the line for your countertop selection.
Pros:   • Virtually non-porous so no sealing is necessary
           • Many colors and patterns available
           • Very resistant to scratching, heat and staining
           • Very durable
Cons:  • May show seams
           • Higher price point

Granite

Granite is the standard nowadays.  It is a beautiful and very unique surface that comes in a vast number of colors and varieties.  Part of the beauty is the variations and veining within the slab. Veins and patterns will even vary between slabs so keep that in mind when selecting granite for your countertops.
Pros:   • Extremely durable
           • Wide variety of colors and styles
           • Relatively affordable
           • Heat and stain-resistant

Cons:  • May show seams
           • Must be sealed

Solid Surface

Solid surface countertops are a great choice - especially in bathrooms with integral sinks.  They have a very nice range of colors and styles and are known for the consistency in the surface pattern.
Pros:   • More than 100 colors
           • Doesn't show seams
           • Scratches and burns can be sanded out
           • Many edge profiles available
           • Bacterial resistant 
           • Matte or polished finish
 
Cons:  • Can be scratched
           • Not heat resistant (can burn)

Concrete

If you want a very unique countertop or one that has an unusual shape to it then you may want to consider a concrete countertop.  Concrete can be decorated prior to finishing to make it a nice focal point to your home.
Different types of crushed aggregate can be added to make your countertop truly unique and personalized.  Colors can be tinted and new treatments help eliminate cracking.
Pros:   • Can be color-tinted
           • Heat and scratch resistant
           • Looks exotic, unusual, more decorative
           • New treatments eliminate cracking
           • Additives reduce porosity 

Cons:  • High price point due to custom work
           • May show seams
           • Cracking is possible
           • Can look industrial
           • Porous, but can be sealed 

Laminates

Laminates have come a long way in the last few years.  They are typically the least expensive type of surface and now offer a very nice variety of colors, textures and patterns.  New patterns have been designed to look just like real granite.  Laminates are a good choice if budget is a primary factor in your choice for a new countertop.
Pros:   • Inexpensive
           • Many colors and patterns available
           • New patterns that look like real granite
Cons:  • May show seams
           • Limited edge profiles available
           • Not heat resistant
           • Cannot be installed with an undermount sink
